Your Name: Francis Osei-Owusu
What do you do?: I am a Photographer & Founder
What's the name of your company/organization: Xpressions Visuals
How did you get started in your field?: Everything started off as a passion I developed from being Editor-In-Chief of my department back at KNUST. So when I finished school, I decided to pursue it. At the time, I knew nothing about the field so I was willing to follow a friend anywhere he went so I could learn; however, he was sometimes too busy to call me to his assignments. One day, I decided to just start on my own - I couldn't just sit down waiting for a call. It was a burning desire and there were so many resources on the internet to learn from. So I started reading online and I built up on what my friend had taught me.
I have been running with the mindset of a lesson Bishop Dag Heward Mills taught us back at school. He said "You can have it if you build it". So I thought "if I really want this job to work, I have to build it myself". So with no background in photography but with help from my friends and mentors, I started with my dad's DSLR camera. I didn't know anything before I started but because of that desire and my willingness to learn, I have been able to establish Xpressions Visuals and we are taking the world by God's grace.
Tell us a bit more about your company/organization: At Xpressions, we provide photography services to the many beautiful people of Ghana and beyond. Our tagline is "Capturing awe-inspiring Xpressions". We do not just take pictures, rather, we make pictures by capturing the awe-inspiring Xpressions of the people we shoot with. We specialize in weddings, events and portraits.
How did your education and previous experiences help you to become what you are today?: I read Land Economy back at KNUST. We are land surveyors. That makes us more of builders of a sort. As I mentioned earlier, I operate with the mindset "you can have it if you build it". So when I see something nice I love or an idea comes that I love and want to have it, then the best option is to build it.
Is there anything else you are working on at this time?: I am looking into a social issue to talk about at the end of the year through my photography skill. I know it will contribute to change and affect lives positively in the country.
How do you define success?: Success is not just about achieving set goals. Rather, it is how the set goals will affect the society in a whole.
If you had to start your career/company/organization over again, what would you do differently?: I would have started right when the idea came when I was in third year at KNUST.
What are the top qualities you would require in someone who wants to work with/for you?: I would require such a person to be innovative and to be a leader.
What advice would you give to students, young professionals and aspiring change makers/entrepreneurs?: They should start right where they are and with whatever they have. Organisations run on wisdom, seek it!
