Your Name: Nana Akosua Adjoo Mintah
What do you do?: I am a Co-founder / Managing Partner
What's the name of your company/organization?: Slay Africa
Where is your company/organization located or headquartered?: Accra, Ghana
How did you get started in your field?: I happened to discover coloured socks was a thing and was becoming a movement. I pitched the idea to a very good friend of mine and he loved it. Hence, we decided to partner and start a company of our own. All we want to do is to bring some freshness, fun and innovation into the business.
Tell us a bit more about your company/organization: SLAY AFRICA was started in 2016. We are a fully Ghanaian-owned lifestyle accessories brand.
Our vision is just to take everyone on an exciting and interesting journey through the designs we put out there. We believe that by making people look good, they eventually feel good about themselves.
Great quality, feel-good coloured socks are our core product but we have recently added cuff-links and should be adding on a few more line before the year ends.
Today, our accessories are sold in Ghana, Nigeria and Liberia and have been worn by and showcased by everyday people and celebrities as well.
How did your education and previous experiences help you to become what you are today?: I have a pretty diverse educational background. I read Actuarial Science which provided me the opportunity to read and delve into different subjects from basic IT to in- depth economics and business management.
I have studied risk management and have a certification in PRINCE2 (Project Management) as well. Knowledge acquired from these subjects have over time provided me with insights in deciding eventually where I wanted to be business – wise and the direction I wanted to take.
My full involvement and participation in organizations like AIESEC (the world’s largest student- run organization) and Rotary has shaped my life in many ways - from understanding how to lead and manage people to how to use the platforms and opportunities given to serve others, impact communities and effect change around us. Overall, all these experiences have just made me a better person
Is there anything else you are working on at this time?: Currently, I am working on my Management Company called Pacific Ideas. We are focusing mostly on talent management and doing other interesting engagements.
How do you define success?: Achieving your set goals... Impacting others’ lives positively... and living an inspiring and happy life.
Who are your heroes and why?: Firstly, my parents. There’s no one like them. Their love, support and teachings got me this far.
My siblings, because they are always supportive and know what to say to pick you up when you are down.
The last person, I have never met before but I am sure she’s a hero to a million of us worldwide. Not because she was first lady but because she carries herself with such compassion, self-confidence and grace. Michelle Obama represents almost everything I want to be and more.
If you had to start your company all over again, what would you do differently?: If I had to start my company again, I would start early!
What are the top qualities you would require in someone who wants to work with/for you?: Be passionate, hardworking and someone who can think outside the box.
What advice would you give to students, young professionals and aspiring change makers/entrepreneurs?: That it is okay to dream and to have the biggest of dreams, but none of that will matter if the first step isn't taken.
