Your Name: Nana Kyei Abankwah

What do you do?: I am the Founder of Wear Nation

Where is your company located?: Tamale, Ghana

How did you start your company?: I thought of how to blend urban and African designs to make a clothing line. I had my last national service allowance as start up capital so basically that's how it started.

Tell us a bit more about your company: Wear Nation is a contemporary African clothing brand that produces casual wear with fine trade cotton T-shirts uniquely designed with Kente, smock and other African fabrics. We're based in Tamale and have been operating since January 2015.

How did your education and previous experiences help you to become what you are today?: My former education didn't help much because engineering and marketing/fashion are very different fields!
After my degree in Geological Engineering, I took a course in Business Management and that has helped me a lot.

Is there anything else you are working on at this time?: Aside from designing clothes for Wear Nation, I'm also into photography.

How do you define success?: My personal definition of success basically is happiness... Doing something that makes me happy and doing things that makes people happy makes me happy and that's how I define success!

Who are your heroes and why?: I look up to Paa Kwesi Ndoum and Osei Kwame Despite. Their success in their fields inspires me.

If you had to start your career/company/organization over again, what would you do differently?: The thing I would do differently is to start early. I didn't [start right away]. I had the idea for a while but I lacked the self motivation to start.

What are the top qualities you would require in someone who wants to work with/for you?: The first quality I look for in a person to work with is loyalty, and then I look at commitment and dedication.

What advice would you give to students, young professionals and aspiring changemakers/entrepreneurs?: With the little you have as a young person, start small, work hard and pray.
